John Leguizamo & Spencer Breslin joining M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening"
-Variety reports that John Leguizamo will join M. Night Shyamalan's "The Happening" which 20th Century Fox will distribute on Friday June 13, 2008. Mark Wahlberg has already been cast in the lead. Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Spencer Breslin ("The Cat in the Hat") will co-star in the movie as well.
Based on a screenplay by Shyamalan, the movie will tell of a global environmental disaster that threatens the existence of mankind. Wahlberg will play a father who takes his family on the run while Leguizamo will play his best friend.
Shooting begins next month in Philadelphia.
Josh Flitter to headline "Ace Ventura 3"
-Variety reports that Josh Flitter will star in "Ace Ventura 3," which is being directed by David M. Evans. Morgan Creek is resurrecting the franchise which introduced Jim Carrey to the world.
In this movie, Flitter will play the son of Ace Ventura and steps into his father's shoes as he becomes a pet detective for the 7th-grade. His skills are tested when a baby panda is stolen and his mother is wrongly arrested for the crime.
Jason Heimberg, Justin Heimberg and Jeff Sank penned the script. Shooting begins in Orlando in September.
X-Files 2
-In a statement to Reuters, David Duchovny revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour that the long-awaited "X-Files" film sequel is moving forward, with him and Gillian Anderson still on board.
"I'm supposed to see a script next week," Duchovny told the newswire at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. He also added that series creator Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz wrote the screenplay, with Carter expected to direct.
Universal and De Niro bringing "Chasing the Dragon" to the screen
-Variety reports that Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal will partner with Universal Pictures to produce a film based on the rise of Mao Zedong and communism in China.
The studio has picked up the rights to "Chasing the Dragon: A Veteran Journalist's Firsthand Account of the 1949 Chinese Revolution." Rowan himself will be a consultant on the project and is one of the few Western journalists to have witnessed the events firsthand.
Jon Marans and Yuri Sivo have been brought on board to pen the screenplay. The story will be turned into a drama with a love story theme.
